Are you among the 50 percent of American adults who do not yet have a will? For many of us, busy day-to-day lives often result in putting the crucial process of estate planning precariously on the back burner. In fact, if you don’t have a clear, considered plan, government treasurers and probate attorneys may just have the ultimate say on your estate. Estate Planning A Plain English Guide to Wills and Trusts is attorney Clint W. Smith’s easy-to-read, invaluable book that will demystify confusing legal issues and dispel common misunderstandings that can have serious repercussions for anyone with a net worth of over $50,000. And, if you have dependent children, it is vital to express your preferences and solidify a plan to make sure those preferences are honored.
Establishing a well-considered estate plan now can save you or your loved ones considerable costs, months of time, and even relationships. While many individuals believe that wills are the most beneficial way in which to handle estates, the author introduces the option of revocable living trusts as an alternative to wills. While wills by nature result in time-consuming probate, public disclosure, estate tax, and attorney fees, Smith explains that revocable living trusts can provide you with a way to minimize taxes, provide flexibility, help you navigate the realities of a living will, and solves the problems inherent to joint tenancy, right of survivorship, and community property.
Throughout, the book also offers examples and anecdotes that reveal the merits of solid estate thinking as well as the unfortunate fallout of ill-conceived planning. Throughout thirteen chapters, the author guides readers through the basics of wills, the meaning of probate, trusts, protecting your assets, and more. He also offers summary prescriptions that distill the content of each chapter.
Estate Planning A Plain English Guide to Wills and Trusts also clears up common misconceptions about wills, offers answers to specific questions about trusts, and offers a step-by-step guide to enable anyone to set up his or her own revocable living trust. Whether you enlist the help of a lawyer, or decide to create a trust on your own, this informative, book will teach you the questions you need to ask, and motivate you to do so immediately. No matter what, Estate Planning will ensure that you are empowered to do a better job of it than the state, and that you leave behind a fitting legacy for your loved ones.

It was helpful as an overview. Some of the chapters near the end were not as useful and I would have appreciated a chapter on Long Term Care instead of a chapter called "Something for Doctors to Think About". The patient is not usually the doctor.Product details

Estate Planning A Plain English Guide to Wills and Trusts edition by Clint W Smith JD Professional Technical eBooks Reviews
The book gives good basic information but not enough details.
Very helpful information..
5 stars. This book is written in a clear, easy to understand manner. At the end of each chapter the author lists questions to ask an attorney as well as action items you can do yourself. He uses examples for single, married, second marriage, small business owners, etc. Something for everyone. I downloaded this for free as part of my Prime membership and will spend the money on a hardcopy to keep for reference.
I found this book to be really informative. I learned about wills and trusts and what each will accomplish. I was able to make a decision on what to do in my situation. I also learned what I should do for my business. I learned my business should be owned by my trust for best protection....a little known fact. I really liked how Mr. Smith used stories to make a point. The stories made it an enjoyable read. You wouldn't think Estate Planning would be such an interesting read! I would highly recommend this book.
I was planning on finding a good attorney to set up a trust. However, I am now well informed on how trusts work, what they cost, what I need to know to protect myself and my family.
The author wrote in a clear understandable way about the pros or cons of the various estate planning choices. He used examples to highlight the differences between living trusts and wills. Now I know why we should avoid probate when possible.
The author seems to be promoting relentlessly living trusts. This is ok but living trusts aren't problem free an in certain circumstances can create increased liability. Also, they are not the inexpensive solution that the authors supports. They need to be reviewed by a very experienced attorney from time to time, for compliance with the laws and this can be very expensive. Also, any trustee disbursing quickly funds without consulting an tax attorney, is undertaking personal liability. These things are of no interest to the author. Living Trusts, clearly have a place but the benefits and challenges that they present need to be clearly explained. In this respect, the book seems to be just promotional material of somebody who profits from Living Trust and not someone who is interested in presenting the facts. Why pay for this? The internet is full of living trust promoters.
It was helpful as an overview. Some of the chapters near the end were not as useful and I would have appreciated a chapter on Long Term Care instead of a chapter called "Something for Doctors to Think About". The patient is not usually the doctor.
